Grant Chu Covell

Managing Editor Grant Chu Covell works in the Boston area. He once worked for a global technology company that made hardware which Xenakis and Babbitt used to good effect. He was the publisher of the brilliant but forgotten The Periodic Journal of Bibliography (1990-95), and his music reviews have appeared in EAR Magazine and InMusic. His instrumental and electroacoustic music has been performed in the U.S. and abroad, and he has shared many CDs of his music with family and friends (one piece was recorded in a refrigerator). A short article about a composition he wrote for piano and tape can be found in the Csound Magazine. Two electroacoustic works have appeared in commercial compilations: Presence III and The Door Project. A recent CD can be found here, and another is in preparation. A long departed family dog’s name was taken from a character in Wagner’s Ring.

EA Bucket 9.

Reflecting his keen mind and spirit, Gould’s five radio documentaries marshal texts, interviews, ambient sounds and music. The “Solitude Trilogy” considers three once-isolated Canadian populations.

Mostly Symphonies 11.

This revealing 2007 compilation reaches back to recordings from 1966-67 and 1983-84, which opened a largely neglected chapter of Czech music.

Allan Pettersson’s Greatest Hits

For some, it may simply be enough to know that there’s a Scandinavian composer straddling Romantic and modern styles who thought his work was being suppressed and who wrote long and depressive symphonies, often deliberately ugly, despite fleeting moments of beauty.

Eötvös, Vidovszky, Szollosy: Hungarian Holiday 1.

I have been meaning to tackle some Hungarian composers and a few colorful Budapest Music Center releases for quite some time, even before Ligeti’s passing (June 12, 2006) made the stack shift ever so slightly.

Piano Factory 4.

No desiccated embryos here. The LTM pair enshrines Satie compositions from the early to mid-1890s, the period preceding the ironic collections with the wacky titles.

Italian Vacation 7.

Some Clementi pieces slow the pulse and compel contemplation. Others fly by like white-water rapids.

Mostly Symphonies 10.

Eventually, Alexander Raskatov brought three movements to light from Schnittke’s illegible sketches, and offered his own Nunc dimittis as a concluding gesture.

La Rondine, Orfeo ed Euridice, Thaïs, etc.

Chief among fresh discoveries is an opera the Met last produced in 1936. La Rondine (1917, rev. 1920) is a work of Puccini’s maturity, roughly contemporary with Il Tabarro whose librettist, Giuseppe Adami, it also shares.

Bursting like firecrackers, Solbiati’s two symphonies strike the listener as difficult works born of equally hard labor.

Pièces de Clavecin 4: Royer, D’Anglebert

Royer had a brief but illustrious career. He taught the King’s children, managed the Concert Spirituel, and had several operas performed at Versailles. A 1742 police blotter reports a fight between Royer and Rameau…
