Grant Chu Covell

Managing Editor Grant Chu Covell works in the Boston area. He once worked for a global technology company that made hardware which Xenakis and Babbitt used to good effect. He was the publisher of the brilliant but forgotten The Periodic Journal of Bibliography (1990-95), and his music reviews have appeared in EAR Magazine and InMusic. His instrumental and electroacoustic music has been performed in the U.S. and abroad, and he has shared many CDs of his music with family and friends (one piece was recorded in a refrigerator). A short article about a composition he wrote for piano and tape can be found in the Csound Magazine. Two electroacoustic works have appeared in commercial compilations: Presence III and The Door Project. A recent CD can be found here, and another is in preparation. A long departed family dog’s name was taken from a character in Wagner’s Ring.

David Tudor: Performer and Composer of Live Electronic Music

A listener unused to the coarseness and bite of analog electronic and computer music will find Tudor’s compositions invigorating. If you have ever tried to pull in a distant AM radio station only to be thrilled by the strange, extraneous noises that came and fled, Tudor’s electronic music is most assuredly for you.

Neither Bad Boy nor Bum: New Recordings of Ornstein and Partch

Ornstein’s career as composer and pianist blossomed at a time when it seemed possible to express anything with music.

December Ramble: NMC and Edition Wandelweiser Records

The Hoxton Thirteen is a collection of new pieces by 13 of the young composers represented at the Hoxton New Music Days of 2000, a summer festival in England. What’s most surprising — even alarming — is how similar some of these 13 efforts sound.

One of the Year’s Best Books (and Then Some)

It’s probable that more has been written about Schoenberg’s ideas and influence than about the music itself.

November Ramble

This is a recording of a man reading philosophy. But the speaker says only single-syllable words and spaces them about eight seconds apart.

An Assorted Ramble

I had never heard of Swiss composer Hermann Meier before this disc, and now I am eager for more.

An Eclectic Piano Ramble

This handful of discs features the piano in all sorts of forms and genres. We examine works intended to be played at the keyboard and inside the piano, others that alter the piano’s tuning, and those that require a synthesized instrument.

A Personalized Ramble

Some readers will notice I haven’t lived up to my promises. The excuses aren’t worth mentioning, except that you should visit our newly reorganized archives, and be prepared to spend at least 12 hours a day there.

An Assortment of Moderns, Part II

I was way pleased when the Grammys gave George Crumb’s Star-child the honors for Best Contemporary Composition of 2000.
