Grant Chu Covell

Managing Editor Grant Chu Covell works in the Boston area. He once worked for a global technology company that made hardware which Xenakis and Babbitt used to good effect. He was the publisher of the brilliant but forgotten The Periodic Journal of Bibliography (1990-95), and his music reviews have appeared in EAR Magazine and InMusic. His instrumental and electroacoustic music has been performed in the U.S. and abroad, and he has shared many CDs of his music with family and friends (one piece was recorded in a refrigerator). A short article about a composition he wrote for piano and tape can be found in the Csound Magazine. Two electroacoustic works have appeared in commercial compilations: Presence III and The Door Project. A recent CD can be found here, and another is in preparation. A long departed family dog’s name was taken from a character in Wagner’s Ring.

Piano Factory 24.

Variation sets on popular tunes often helped pay the rent. A gifted improviser, Beethoven was known to delight friends for hours if the mood struck.

Forsberg offers a program of doubly neglected works. First off, these are all pieces by women composers, and secondly, none of them fits easily into the big styles of the late 19th or early 20th century.

String Theory 25: 12 Quartets, etc.

Sani has set himself the task of responding to Rothko’s work. Clearly it’s not possible to replicate the canvasses’ images with music, but it is possible to present forms and shapes that reflect Rothko’s expansive vision and bold color fields.

String Theory 24: Quartets in Different Intonation (at least 15 of them)

Johnston’s ten string quartets constitute one of the most vital yet obscure series in the latter half of the 20th century.

Unsolicited Remarks

Even after bumping into derivatives and less artful followers, Lachenmann’s original acerbic brittleness still delights after a long absence.

Mostly Symphonies 32.

It becomes a bit of a game to guess what lies around the corner, like anticipating whether a rogue chef might festoon a sweet dessert with chopped parsley.

Mostly Symphonies 31.

It is regrettable that late 19th-century American music is routinely ignored, or treated as a provincial curiosity, when entire generations were trained in Europe.

Chion: Etudes and Essays (EA Bucket 26.)

Brocoli compiles Chion’s earliest pieces. A strict archivist might have sequenced these chronologically, but this order makes a dramatic design.
