Après l’artisanat furieux or Post-Boulez
Most of us can only look back and marvel at the mid-century Darmstadt classes, at Boulez’s overlapping tenures with the Cleveland Orchestra, the BBC Symphony and the New York Philharmonic, and the creation of IRCAM.

Descending
A representation of a composer on the verge of brilliance, this recording is essential and, for now, the only option.

Creating in the Moment: A Q&A with Beth Levin
“A pianist’s work just begins at the opening of the concert. It can’t be wiped away and begun again. For a long time I preferred music to simply fly out to the atmosphere.”

Feldmania
It feels so stupid to write about late Feldman. Those of us who take up the task can’t help but show off how much of a worthwhile effort it was to submit to the large time span. Let’s admit it, the cult of Feldman is a club where membership is gained through persistent endurance.

Narrow-Minded Opinionism 1.
Programs where viols accompany singing may allow a few instrumentals to break up the prevailing routine. This superb 2010 disc does the opposite, with Julianne Baird on only eight of the 22 tracks and none of them overexposed.

Why we don’t do end-of-year lists
We don’t listen to everything. How could we possibly even deign to determine what might be the best of the year if we haven’t heard all of it?

At least it’s good to see more Bacewicz on record.
String Theory 15: Piano Trios, Quartets and Quintets, etc.
This two-CD set’s anchor is the big Piano Quintet, whose music went missing after initial performances. The autograph score was delivered anonymously to the Schnabel archive in 2001 and this is its first recording. At three movements spanning 55 minutes, it’s a monster.
